World Cup 2010 is heading rapidly towards a denouement and soccer fans all over the world are getting more and more anxious to see which of the teams is going to get the crown. The 19th tournament was definitely one of the most exciting with surprising performances, twist of fates and first time events: an African country hosted the finals; Slovakia and Serbia qualified as independent nations; FIFA made payments to the domestic clubs; Paraguay qualified for the quarter-finals; for the first time a country (Ireland) asked to take part as the 33rd participant. Who qualified for the Quarter-finals following the matches ! that took place from 26 to 29 of June? After 4 days of thrilling matches, crushed hopes, desperation, disappointment, anxiety, mad happiness, the list with the last 8 teams is finally complete: Uruguay, Ghana, Germany, Argentina, Netherlands, Brazil, Paraguay, and Spain. After Germany defeated England with an overwhelming score of 4-1, Argentina gave a 3-1 blow to Mexico and Brazil sent home Chile without even giving them the opportunity to score a goal in the 3-0 match. However, the best match was against Portugal, a fierce team with a record of 19 undefeated matches in a row. There were not many goals to see in the last two matches of the World cup round of 16 last night. Neither there were many goals, nor there was big difference between four rivals. However, only two of them could pass further. Only a chance resulted a duel among Paraguay and Japan in the afternoon. Japanese team reached high past matches, beating Denmark 3-1. This time they would aim high challenging even overwhelming Paraguay. Audience saw no goal in regular time and both teams played well and determined so the result was about to come from penalty shootouts. Although South American team gained more possession of the game, they had relatively few chances to score. The only ! representative of Asian football lowered their “samurai” quick attacks that became memorable in previous matches in the second half. The extratime primised either bright start of both of teams or random victory in shootouts. The third half was signed by Japanese ressurection, but this eventually didn't brought the victory. Neither it does for their rivals in the last seven minutes. Penalties will be certainly one of the most black moments for Yuichi Komano, the only one to miss the net, hitting only a cross bar. Paraguay scored 100 hundred percent right and won the match 0(5)-0(3). It will be the fourth South American team to play quarterfinals along with Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. The second match among Spain and Portugal ended up better for Spanish team that took over the area and in the second half it finally succeeded against onld rival. David Villa pushed the only ball behind Portugal goalie and increased the pressure on them. The portion of psychology ! was significant, although one could see, Portugals didn't give! up till the last second. England is out of the World Cup! Millions of England soccer fans watched the match that would shatter their World Cup dreams. However, they were accustomed to this sort of disappointment as it also happened in 2002, when in the quarter-final match Brazil won over England with a 1-2 score. Is there any hope left for Britain’s soccer team? As usual escape goats will be pointed out and mainly the blame will go to the renowned manager Fabio Capello for not being an Englishman. The truth is that the English team was no match for the Germany’s slickness, fast movement and clin! ical finishing. On the field the players are responsible for their performance, no matter what strategy the coach adopts. As far as the fans are concerned some the English team that qualified for the World Cup was totally different than the one that seemed helpless against German players’ attacks. Although they had the ball plenty of times, England just didn’t manage to get close enough to the rival’s gate, while their poor defense ultimately led to their defeat. The players were rather heavy in movement and barely managed to keep pace with the young German players who looked dashing on the field with slick coordinate kicks and fast movements. The victory obtained against England might be overshadowed by puerile thoughts that the match would have had another ending if the Uruguayan referee Jorge Larrionda had not disallowed Lampard’s goal (bounced off the bar ! and barely behind the goal line). Sunday matches in round of 16 were marked by huge mistakes of referees. First they denied 100 percent legitimate English goal in German net, then Italian referee Roberto Rossetti accepted a goal made from an offside and mixed the cards for Mexicans playing against Argentina. Although Argentina was hot winning candidate, they had to slip over Mexian wall. Mexicans held their shape from the begining of the tournament and could hurt Maradona's team. In fact the play started good for them, pushing back Argentina back to its goalman. Until the first surprising goal, Mexico attacked Argentina and it seemed the match could end up with different result. But after Carlos Tevez's con! troversial goal, the portion of necessary luck moved towards Argentina. Tevez scored twice with Gonzalo Higuain against one goal from Javier Hernandez on Mexican side. Both teams played enjoyable football in a style fans and critics demanded from the beginning of the tournament. After final whistle it was sure Argentina will pass further to meet Germany in quarter finals while Mexicans were to leave the group of 16 just like four times before. The last lime they reached the quarter-finals was in 1986, hosting the World Cup. Argentina is moving faster, trying to balance stress laid upon its team. Germany surprisingly took revenge on its old rivals England when beating it 4-1. Some critics say Germany will be the fist real test for players of Argentina. World Cup 2010 took by surprise many fans all over the world. This year the surprises seemed to never cease. Mexico is a promising team and the performance on the field was more than sufficient to bring them the victory over one of the 2006 finalists, France. On the other hand, soccer lovers also had some disappointing surprises, England being among them. England was one of the favorites to the title before the tournament started, but the poor performance made doubtful even the qualification for the next stage. Nonetheless, on Sunday England players and management met in order to come up with a solution that will bring back the ! shine and glory the team lost. Players had confronted the coach, Fabio Capello, trying to convince him to adopt a new strategy as well as to reproach him the treatment and intimidation to which he subjects them. What happened between them and what they discussed will remain a mystery, but fans hope that the team will manage to solve the issues and get back on track. Following a 0-1 victory against Slovenia, England managed to pass to the Round of 16 where Germany will await them for a match that will make history. It will be tough to enter a match with the top runner of Group D, especially now when they are changing strategy. The odds might be against them, but the British team is prepared and will fight to the very end, trying to not disappoint again the fans, those that left the comfort of their homes just to support the players. The whole French nation is disappointed. But who would ever expect that the source of disappointment would not be some particular politician, but players from national football team? That is why disillusion hurts even more. France wants to see in new football coach Laurent Blanc its new savior. French people, already tired of childish antics of its football team want change, and radical. Blanc, who until now has been coaching at Bordeaux, has a huge job ahead. His biggest task is to restore the faith of the nation, which was sorely tested during the South African debacle. What is more Blanc will also be charged with fixing a breakdown in communication between the coach and ! the media. Also communication between coach and players is failing and so the coach’s authority over the players must be reasserted. Some are afraid the Bordeaux’s damp squib could be a barrier for Blanc on his way to win the hearts and mainly respect of the players in the team. As France 24 wrote: “Blanc will have to use his credibility as a decorated former player to deflate some egos, and perhaps throw out several of the team’s troublemakers, to impose his authority from the start.” Nicolas Anelka, after his a foul-mouthed outburst at couch Domenech, will be probably one of the most monitored players now. The defending champions Italy surprisingly and unexpectedly exit the World Cup on Thursday after terrible defeat from Slovakia 3-2. Italian coach Marcello Lippio took full responsibility for the loss. Four years ago Italians could not believe they had became world champions, now they can't believe they are out. It is not difficult to find out what caused the failure of Italian team. Long time before they even arrived in South Africa, everyone knew that the team's main problem is scoring goals. This problem popped up also Thursday afternoon when Italy was defeated by Slovakia 3-2. This way Italy joined France, which is also out of game thanks to problems inside the team. Ita! ly was in bad position even before the match with Slovakia and it was thanks to draws with Paraguay and New Zealand, both ended 1-1. Even though Italy had good defense, they were not able to score and push the ball forward. Italians were not able to break down the defenses of the opponents. Italy was criticized for lack of creativity, flair and disability to create scoring opportunities. The problem is also that the coach probably did not choose good players. Among strikers there is no one who would be able to create goal opportunity to his partner. Coach Azzuri did not want to take any risk which at the end cost him the most. The team tried to rely on its traditional strengths, good defense and ability to create a goal out of nothing. However, few mistakes in the defense cost Italy place in the final 16 of the World Cup.

Un autre match remarquable a été offert par l'Argentine avec la performan! ce spectaculaire des joueurs de football quant à la vitesse, le coup franc et la vigueur. Derrière l'équipe gagnant n'était personne d'autres que la légende Diego Maradona. Bien que la croyance générale soit qu'un bon joueur ne peut pas être un bon entraîneur et à l'envers, Maradona a prouvé de nouveau qu'il mérite bien sa réputation. Le moment maximal du match 4-1 était un but magique de Gonzalo Higuain, alors que le joueur principal était Lionel Messi qui a orchestré tous les quatre buts. Au début l'équipe asiatique, Corée du Sud, a montré qu'il ne serait pas un concurrent facile, mais graduellement l'agilité des adversaires les a emportés. Both the USA and England qualified to the final 16 of the World Cup. The USA have beaten Algeria and England won over Slovenia on Wednesday. Slovenia with 4 points ended on third place in its group. Both matches were quite close and had the same result 1-0. The United States finished as a leader of Group C, which means they are ahead of England. Exciting match between the USA and Algeria was rich on chances. Both sides played good game, but the USA's goal sank Algeria. The USA's player Landon Donovon scored in the second minute of injury time. In spite of the fact that the United States were favorites of the match, Algerian players gave them some scares. England can thanks ! to its player Jermain Defoe who scored in a first half of the match. The win put England over to the last 16 of the World Cup. England clearly dominated the game. However, English were not able to increase the score any more, even though Defoe had some more goal chances. Slovenian couch Matjaz Kek said Slovenia team had played great, but had not had luck it had deserved. Although for Kek the loss was a big disappointment, he was proud of his team. Slovenia would continue if USA had not won over Algeria. But USA did and that pushed it on the top of group C. Slovenian players have strong support back home, their fans are proud of the success and will probably wait them at the airport in Ljubljana when they come home on Saturday.

Americký aj anglický futbalový tím sa kvalifikoval do finálnej šestnástky vo svetovom pohári. V utorok sa odohrali dva kľúčové zápasy, v ktorých Spojené štáty porazili Alžírsko a Anglicko porazilo Slovinsko. Slovinsko so štyrmi bodmi skončilo na treťom mieste vo svojej skupine. Oba zápasy boli dosť vyrovnané a prekvapivo skončili s rovnakým výsledkom 1-0. Spojené štáty skončili na prvom mieste v skupine C, čo znamená, že predčili Anglicko, ktoré zaujalo druhé miesto. Napínavý z! ápas bohatý na gólové šance sa odohral medzi Spojenými štátmi a Alžírskom. Obe strany odohrali dobrú hru, avšak gól Spojených štátov potopil nádeje Alžírska. Jeho spoluhráči ho s obrovským nadšením nasledovali a jeden po druhom sa na neho hádzali. Neskôr nasledovali reči o sile Amerického ducha a viere v dobro sveta, ktoré sú tak typické pre eufóriu tohto typu. Avšak až realita ukáže, aký silný je tento Americký duch! a či bude mať silu prebojovať sa až do fi! nál e. What all can happen when few rude words come out from your mouth!? The story could be told by French forward Nicolas Anelka whose words insulted not only French coach Raymond Domenech to whom were addressed, but also boss of French football Jean-Piere Escalettes. But vulgar and angry words between Anelka and Domenech were not the only troubles France has on this year’s World Cup. Anelka who was sent home for insulting coach at halftime of a 2-0 defeat by Mexico on Thursday was followed by another row between captain Patrice Evra and a fitness coach, the training boycott and the resignation of a senior team official. As if it was not enough some sponsors of France̵! 7;s scandal-hit football team have started to withdraw advertising campaigns featuring the players, including campaign featuring Nicolas Anelka. Even though there are two opposed perspectives, the truth is again somewhere in the middle. Some – especially older players such as Just Fontaine – say Anelka should have been excluded immediately. Others, even though they are not apologizing Anelka’s words, are pointing at inability of current coach Domenech to lead and train team. Duel between France and South Africa was an ultimate fight for the pride. The performance, however was too lousy to even watch – just in case you were French fan. France lost 2-1 against South Africa and their hope to pass further has dissolved in great disappointment. 2006 Silver Champions didn't scored any victory and for the first time they just go home. The victory belonged to host team, though it has had bitter taste. South Africans didn't qualified for the next round of Championship and so it would be the first time hosting country didn't pass as well. The mood among domestic fans was kind of frustrated before the match, many of them had even chosen another team! to support. The only chance for Bafana Bafana to pass was either to win without getting a goal or to wait for Mexico killing Uruguay or vice versa with high score. Although Uruguay won over Mexico, both teams qualified for upcoming matches leaving Bafana Bafana in front of the door.At last South African team won their pride and literally blown 40,000 stadium with excitement, although their high ends low. But not lower then French team. Previous scandals intensed after coach Raymond Domenech sent Anelka back home for insulting and some of players rebelled and didn't appeared on their last matches. Domestic media accused the whole team, the whole situation and blamed the materialism of French morals. Futbalový duel medzi Francúzskom a Juhoafrickou republikou bol doslova zápasom o hrdosť. Samotný zápas však nebol veľmi potešujúci – hlavne pre francúzskych fanúšikov. Francúzsky tím v tesnom závese prehral s juhoafrickým tímom 2-1 a ukončil tak svoje pôsobenie na šampionáte. Vicemajster z roku 2006 z turnaja odchádza z posledného miesta, bez výhry a so ziskom jediného bodu. Zdá sa že je to bude naozaj historická chvíľa, pretože doteraz sa Francúzom podarilo zo základnej skupiny kvalifikovať. V&#! 237;ťazstvo domáceho tímu Bafana Bafana však malo trpkú príchuť. Hoci sa im podarilo získať 4 body (rovnako ako Mexiku na druhej priečke v skupine), počet gólov rozhodol o tom, že zelenožltý tím turnaj opustí tiež. Táto situácia je tiež historická a mierne kuriózna, je to po prvý krát, čo hosťujúca krajina nepostupuje do štvrť finále.Domáci fanúšikovia si pred zápasom začali vyberať “ náhradný” tím, ktorému by v pokračujúcom turnaji mohli fandiť. Bafana Bafana však napokon vybojovala svoju česť a víťazstvo po záverečnom hvizde doslova zvdihlo 40,000 štadión na nohy. Jedinú nádej pre juhoafričanov znamenalo buď bezgólové víťazstvo alebo vysoká výhra v du! eli Mexiko – Uruguay. Uruguay Mexiko predstihol o jedin&! #253; g& #243;l a tak postupujú oba tímy. Juhoafrická Republika na turnaji končí. Lepšie ako Francúzsko, ktoré v posledné dni postihuje jeden škandál za druhým. Na konci minulého týždňa tréner Raymond Domenech z turnaja vylúčil Anelku. Situácia sa vyostrila protestom niektorých hráčov, ktorí odmietli nastúpiť na tréning a zápas. Po rezignácii riaditeľa tímu sa vec dostala k politikom, zasahovať musela ministerka pre šport. Do poslednej chvíle nikto netušil, či sa Domenechovi vôbec podarí zostaviť tím do posledného zápasu.

Slová, ktoré odkázal koučovi francúzskeho tímu Raymondovi Domenechovi urazili nielen jeho, no aj šéfa francúzskeho futbalu Jeana-Pierea Escalettesa, ktorý požadoval od Anelku ospravedlnenie. Keďže sa ho nedočkali, Anelka sa musel vrátiť domov. Avšak vulgárne a zlostné slová nie sú jediným problémom, s ktorým musí francúzsky tím na tohtoročn! ých Majstrovstvách sveta zápasiť. Neúspech v hre zdá sa vyvoláva agresiu a napätie aj u ostatných členov tímu. Po urážke, ktorú Anelka uštedril trénerovi sa vyskytla ďalšia potyčka, tento raz medzi kapitánom Patriceom Evraom a fitnes koučom. Neskôr nasledoval tréningový bojkot a rezignácia vysokopostaveného tímového funkcionára. Ako keby to ešte nestačilo, štrajkovať začínajú aj sponzori tímu. Tí začínajú z trhu sťahovať reklamné kampane, v ktorých figurovali hráči tímu, vrátane spomínaného Anelku. Hoci existujú dva protichodné názory, ani jeden z nich Anelkove slová neospravedlňuje. Soccer fans all over the world have had some interesting matches these days that brought back the charm of the sport. FIFA World Cup had a boring start, but the latest performances were worthy of all praise. One of the most impressive encounters was that between the 2006 finalists, France, and Mexico on 17th June showing an ambitious team like Mexico rising far above expectation and winning with a laudable score of 2-0. Another remarkable game was offered by Argentina with spectacular performance from the soccer players regarding speed, free kick and stamina. Behind the winning team wa! s none other than the legend Diego Maradona. Although the general belief is that a good player cannot be a good coach and the other way around, Maradona proved once again that he is worth of his reputation. The peak moment of the 4-1 match was the hat-trick goal of Gonzalo Higuain, while the master player was the skillful Lionel Messi who orchestrated all the four goals. Argentina shined on the field with a smooth passing style and memorable free-kicks. At the beginning the Asian team, South Korea, showed they will not be so easily defeated, but gradually the agility of the adversaries wore them down. Fans watching the match were flabbergasted at the end when they least expected for an interesting goal like that of Higuain to take place. Just moments before the referee to blow the whistle Mesi kicked the ball that would then be sent in the South Korea’s gate by a header from Higua! in, the 22-year-old player that has a very promising future. ! Pre mňa – futbalového analfabeta je naozaj ťažké akokoľvek sa vyjadrovať či nebodaj hodnotiť výkony jednotlivých tímov či samotných hráčov. Je to v prvom rade povinnosť ich koučov a samozrejme zanietených fanúšikov. A tí, ako sa zdá, sú zápasom, ktorý včera odohral francúzsky tím s Mexikom viac ako sklamaní. Futbaloví reprezentanti Francúzska vzbudili na majstrovstvách sveta rozpaky a negatívne emócie. Ako napísal denník L´Equipe, Francúzsko stojí na schodíkoch do li! etadla – smer domov. Francúzsko, ktoré je šampiónom z roku 1998 získalo z dvoch zápasov len jeden bod a tak budúci týždeň hrajú s hosťujúcou Juhoafrickou republikou. Avšak ani výhra nad JAR nemusí stačiť na kvalifikáciu. Sklamanie z prehry s Mexikom (ktoré vyhralo 2:0) bolo nielen citeľné, no priam viditeľné. Kouč francúzskeho tímu Raymond Domenech bol zachmúrený po tejto prehre. „Stratil som reč. Je to nepochybne veľké sklamanie pre všetkých, ktorí nám verili.“ povedal Domenech pre francúzsku stanicu TF1. „Zostáva ešte jeden zápas. Budeme hrať o česť a s nádejou na zázrak. Potrebovali sme dnes aspoň remízu, aby sme ešte mali osud vo svojich rukách.“ dodal. To sa im však nepodarilo. A o tom (bohu! 82;iaľ) šport je. Tam kde jeden víťazí! ;, druh& #253; prehráva. Nuž vtedy ma napadnú slová jedného známeho:“Na futbal potrebuješ kusisko šťastia.” Keď však vidím Čile poraziť Honduras po viac ako 40 rokoch, pokiaľ Kórejský tím dá zabrať gigantovi ak! o je Brazília, pokiaľ Švajčiarsko prestrieľa európskeho šampióna Španielsko rozmýšľam či je to šťastím alebo kumulovanou dávkou vôle vopred odpísaných tímov. Fanúškovia však majú čo rozoberať...Včerajšok opäť priniesol šokujúce víťazstvo – Grécko porazilo Nigériu v pomere 2-1 a spečatilo tak svoje historicky prvé víťazstvo na majstrovstvách sveta. Grékov môže nad vodou držať nielen prvé víťazstvo, ale práve víťazstvo nad takým silným súperom ako je Nigéria. Africký tím držal hru pod kontrolou a už v 16. minúte poslal Uche 35 metrovým oblúkom loptu za chrbát Alexandrosa Tzorvasa. Africká prevaha trvala až do 33. minúty, kedy rozhodca ! červenou kartou vylúčil Kaita. V tom istom mome! nte gr&# 233;cky tréner Otto Rehhagel vymenil obrancu Socratisa Papastathopoulosa za útočníka Giorgia Samarasa a Gréci ukázali svoju prevahu, Výmena sa ukázala štastným krokom, pretože tím postupne nabral istotu a v 44. a 71. minúte sa dve strely ocitli v africkej bránke. Gréci udržali ohnivé tempo aj v druhej polovici zápasu a týmto víťazstvom tak oživili svoju nádej na postup zo skupiny B. Deklasovali Kóreu, ktorá včera skončila po prehre 4-1 s Argentínou. Maradonov tím je v tomto zápase vôbec prvým bezpečne postupujúcim tímom do osemfinále.

Un alt joc remarcabil a fost oferit de Argentina cu performan! te spectaculoase de la jucatorii de fotbal in ceea ce priveste viteza, lovitura libera si rezistenta. In spatele echipei castigatoare a fost nimeni altul decat legenda Diego Maradona. Desi credinta generala este ca un jucator bun nu poate fi si un antrenor bun si nici invers, Maradona a dovedit inca o data ca el este demn de reputatia de rege al fotbalului. Momentul de varf al meciului cu scorul de 4-1 a fost golul palarie al lui Gonzalo Higuain, in timp ce jucatorul maestru a fost iscusitul Lionel Messi, care a orchestrat toate cele patru goluri. Argentina a stralucit pe teren cu un stil de pase bine inchegat si lovituri libere memorabile. La inceputul meciului echipa din Asia, Coreea de Sud, a aratat ca nu vor fi atat de usor de invins, dar treptat agilitatea adversarilor a obosit-o. Fanii ce urmareau meciul au fost consternati la sfarsit atunci cand nimeni nu se mai astepta la ceva d! eosebit precum golul lui Higuain sa aiba loc. La numai cateva ! clipe in ainte ca arbitrul sa fluiere de sfarsit Mesi a lovit mingea care a fost apoi trimisa in poarta Coreei de Sud de catre o lovitura cu capul a lui Higuain, jucatorul de 22 de ani care are un viitor foarte promitator.
