Rest in peace, Paul!
by Barbora Misakova

If you were a fan of Paul, one and probably only famous octopus in the world, then I will not please you. This oracle octopus, who shot to fame in the World Cup this summer for his uncanny ability to predict the results of Germany’s soccer matches, has died at his home in Oberhausen. This English-born octopus made headlines across the globe after he correctly forecast how Germany would fare in seven matches. Later, when Paul tipped Spain to beat the Netherlands in the final, his popularity was sealed. Immediately after the match (which Spain really won) Paul has got into the center of attention. Following the World Cup, a Spanish zoo made a transfer bid for Paul, but ! his German keepers refused him to sell. Unfortunately, neither Paul nor his fans enjoyed him for a long time. After few months Paul has passed away at the age of two. Stefan Porwoll, the centre’s manager said: “He appears to have passed away peacefully during the night, of natural causes, and we are consoled by the knowledge that he enjoyed a good life.” Paul will be kept in cold storage until the center decides how to mark the mollusc’s extraordinary life. “We may decide to give Paul his own small burial plot within our grounds and erect a modest permanent shrine.” said Porwoll. But his early death will not be the end of story. As Russian newspaper informed Paul also predicted who would be Russia’s next president in 2012, but for these result we will have to wait a bit. They will be kept secret until the election year.
