New Zealand Surprises Italy
by Magdalena Rosova
New Zealand is the biggest surprise in Group F, on Sunday it ashamed holding defending champions Italy when it drew a game 1-1. The game was a big surprise also for Italy itself because New Zealand was considered as an outsider. New Zealand firstly shocked everybody when it drew with Slovakia 1-1 and now it managed to do the same with favorite Italy. New Zealand scored early in the seventh minute when Italian defense failed to stop a long free kick of Shane Smeltz. In the 29th minute Italian Vincenzo Iaquinta equalized, after Tommy Smith fouled Daniele De Rossi. But captain of New Zealand Ryan Nelsen called the decision of Guatemalan referee Carlos Batres “ridiculous.! ” Nelson said that the referee whistled before there was even contact and that it was almost impossible to put the ball forward. It was quite visible that even one hour after the game had finished, Nelsen was still angry. He said that even De Rossi had been laughing about the decision of the referee. Anyway, the medias immediately reported about the disappointment of Italy, which is now in a risky position. New Zealand has only 25 professional football players, while Italy has 3,541 of them. Thanks to the draw with Italy, New Zealand is now second in Group F. Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport wrote that the players had shown many mistakes in their defense. Medias further criticized decision of coach Lippi to change the line-up. Italy is now in a complicated situation, but if it beat Slovakia, there is still chance to continue.
