Violent Sports
by Claudia Sonea

Darwin reduced humanity to an ordinary process of evolution, establishing as our ancestor the ape, a primate. Religious people would call it a blasphemy, scientists would say that there is little evidence of this and that it needs further research, but anyone who affords to take a minute of thought and analyze human behavior would be inclined to agree with the father of the evolutionist theory. From playing with one’s hair (the apes are actually looking for parasites) to the survival of the strongest, humans still manifest some of the basic instincts inherited probably from our common ancestor with the apes Pie! rolapithecus catalaunicus. Among the most terrifying resemblance that we share with the primates is violence: wars, crimes, bloody sports, movies with envisaging violence and the list is endless. Let’s take a study case: sports. American Football is most definitely an approved and cherished expression of our inborn violence, but there are other sports too that qualify and that are usually preferred by men. The strong and powerful counterpart of the female must affirm as a dominating leader and prove himself superior to the other males of the herd, even though they enjoy walking in a herd rather than outside it. Men usually gather in packs; they are loyal to one another and they know who the Alfa male among them is. Their main pleasure is to get drunk and thus have an excuse to act like primates. Taking advantage of sports like football, they get loose and then blame it all on the heat of the moment. On Sun! day at what it should have been a friendly World Cup match, 16! people were injured because a mob of fans forgot about civilization and tried to enter the Makhulong stadium (Tembisa) by force. It is true that the incident took place in Africa, a land that is much more primitive, and that they consumed alcohol, but this is not an unusual event for the football games. Forty-three people were killed in 2001 in the vicinity of Tembisa, at a stadium in Johannesburg, while in 1964 more than 300 football fans died and another 500 were injured during a match between Argentina and Peru. Brawls, vandalism and intimidation are just some of the manifestations of the primitive male. Women usually show their primitiveness in regards to men (always logging for the most powerful, for the strongest, perhaps to steal someone else’s property) and shopping. There is the hunting instinct which lays deep in women, ready to attack and fight for the ultimate pray: a Gucci dress.
