Rescuers reach Italian after 11 die on K2
by Paulina Neshybova

A Pakistan guide said on Monday, that rescuers have saved a Dutch climber who as the only one has survived on K2 as he refused to surrender to exaustion and frostbite, but unfortunatelly other 11 climbers died. The Dutch climber Marco Confortola will be probably brought with four rescuers to the Adance Base Camp, where is food and medicine as well. Finally they could lift him by the army helicopter from the peak of K2 before the dark has fallen, but his feet were ina relly bad shape. However, most likely he has saved at least is hands. The others didi not have such luck and according to the rescuers, probably one is still missing, an Irishman. Among the others who died there were some Pakistan clombers, then Korean, from Nepal, France, Serbia and Norwegia as well. They could have died by the freezeing air without much ogygen or during they descent when the ice wall collpased. And two climbers died during the ascent, but all of them were in the area known for climbers as a „ Death Zone“.
The disaster probably happened at the steep gully known as Bottleneck. They were really exhausted by the ascent and two Nepali and three Korean died when the ice beagn to faal down. Another rescued climber Wilco van Rooijen, had lost there his members adn was trying to tell them to cooperate, but according to him, people were caring just fore their own self-preservation. Some of them were even trying to find a way off the mopuntain which meant certainly death. However, even here they were captured by the so called summit fever. Most such fatalities therefore happen when unexperienced people are trying to do the commercial climbing and they are not prepared for situations like this one.
