Chris Cantell Discusses Sports: Nastia Liukin is the winner

On Friday, Nastia Liukin became the winner of the all around Olympic gold medal in women’s gymnastics. Liukin has beaten her friend and teammate Shawn Johnson by just six-tenths. Only a couple of weeks before the Olympics it was the other way around, and at the U.S. championship Liukin was beaten by Johnson.

Now, at the Olympics, when Liukin realized she is the winner, her eyes were filled with tears. Her couch Valeri Liukin, who is also her father, grabbed her and held her tight for a couple of minutes after winning.

Valeri Liukin was double gold medalist for the Soviet Union 20 years ago, but in the all-around he came up short with his teammate. So his child winning all around was the best that could happen to him now. He said it’s impossible “to describe how proud I am.”

Nastia Liukin has her eyes filled with tears while climbing on the top of the medals podium but didn’t let them fall until she heard the U.S. national anthem. She said: “Standing on the podium and hearing `Olympic champion' next to my name was a dream come true. Everything pays off at this very moment.”

Johnson, who is maybe surprisingly good friends with Liukin said about the following words about the winning of her teammate: „I gave my heart and soul out there today. Nastia deserved the gold. “

Nastia Liukin is only the second straight American, who won all-around medal, succeeding training Carly Patterson as the champion of gymnastics.

Liukin has talked a little about her father also, after winning the medal. She said “Just to know that he was so close to the all-around gold and didn't quite achieve it. And I hope, you know, I cleared away any of those bad little memories for him. I hope that this definitely tops it. I have a few more to go, but it is an amazing accomplishment just to be here with him, out on the floor 20 years after he competed. I think it just means so much more to both of us. I don't know, just all the hard work paying off. All the injuries, tears, blood, rips - everything. “

Just a year ago, however, Liukin wasn’t at the best shape a received much criticism. People said she was washed up and she should give up. But now, she is everyone’s favourite. A quick turn, right?
