Olympic games are not for me
by Barbora Misakova

I am always honest and I would rather call things their real names. When I don't like something or if I am not interested in it enough, I don't have a problem to say it directly. Lot of long weeks and months of preparations on Olympic Games in China were people still talking about it, talking about situation in China and Tibet, talking about bad air in Beijing, and I was just watching it all inactively. I am not a sport lover, I like watching beach volleyball or hockey from time to time, but to be honest, Olympics are not for me. First of all I don't like that madness connected with them. Everything must be prepared, new stadium must be built or at least rebuilt, what would people tell about us, if the Games were taking place in our old one? People are just doing from this event a big show, everything must work and be done well. If there is one little problem, it is a catastrophe. They are just taking it too serious. Another thing which is not so clear to me is why are some sports added to the program and some of them are after long years just displaced. I always thought that Olympic games represents something like a tradition. Tradition which is not secured just by repeating Olympics every four years, but also tradition of particular sports, doesn't matter if they are interesting for youngsters or not. Of course lot of people would argue with me right now, because watching old and (by the words of some people also) boring sport disciplines would never satisfy so many spectators as for example some kind of extreme sport. People just want to be modern all the time, and that's why they consider Olympic games to be modern as well. While in 1896 there were only nine sports offered concrete athletics, cycling, fencing, gymnastics, weightlifting, shooting, swimming, tennis and wrestling, this year we have 28 sports with 38 disciplines. Another problem for me is to recognize what is the difference between terms “sport”, “discipline” and “event”. The IOC (International Olympic Committee) uses these terms differently. Just take for example swimming – it is a branch of aquatic sports. Some of the sports can have lot of other disciplines, which can be sometimes considered as separate sports, but they don't. Disciplines are for example swimming backstroke, breaststroke or freestyle. And finally event is a any kind of competition where you can award a medal, for example swimming 100-meter bacstroke. Now you probably think I am a bit crazy, but when I am watching something I have to understand it. But anyway, I think I will never watch Olympic games as I watch Desperate housewives!
