Already a legend

Michael Phelps is only 23 years old but already holds a place in history. Basically there is nothing more he could achieve in swimming. Victory in 4x100m medley means he currently holds the record for the most gold medals won at a single Olympics, the magic number being eight for the American “shark pool”. With eight gold medals won in Beijing he surpassed another legendary American swimmer Mark Spitz who won seven gold medals at the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. Four years ago at Athens Phelps won six gold and two bronze. Back then many suspected that the best for the American swimming is yet to come. Among the highlights of his Beijing journey is undoubtedly his stunning medley swim and unbelievably close 100m butterfly victory over Milorad Cavic from Serbia who has lost the gold by 0.01 of a second. Another one who was constantly in the shadow of Phelps was Laszlo Cseh of Hungary. He collected three silver medals. In the 200m and 400m individual medley and in the 200m butterfly he always came second after Phelps who won each event with a new world record. “It´s not a shame to be beaten by a better one,” said Cseh. “I´m lucky to have the talent and drive that I have… I wouldn´t trade any of it in,” confessed Phelps. Before the race you can always see him with earphones on listening to hip-hop and stare full of concentration. And what does man who has everything plan for the future? “Over the next four years I´d like to try some new events and see what happens. Bob says he wants to try things he hasn´t done before and try some new training methods,” he said referring to his coach Bob Bowman who will introduce new training regime to keep the champion interested. The question is what will London Olympics in 2012 bring for Michael Phelps..
