Norway scores early to beat US 2-0
by Michaela Vargova

QINHUANGDAO, China – Wednesday brought the first amazement at the Beijing Olympics Norway in form of a surprising headway of women's soccer match Norway vs. United States. Norwegians defeated the U.S. women's soccer team 2-0. Promptly from the beginning, the Norwegians jumped on the Americans and played like the medal contender and got two goals in the first four minutes. The first goal-kicker Leni Laursen Kaurin head the ball into an open net in the second minute. Two minutes later, Melissa Wiik brilliantly scored again. "We are satisfied," Norway coach Bjarne Berntsen said. “We are very grateful for the tremendous start we had in this game. I think we played a very, very good defensive game, and there were very few big chances for the United States.“
The Americans' best chances came in the closing minutes. Quite obviously, the U.S. team seemed to miss its leading scorer Abby Wambach, who broke her left leg in the team's final warm-up match ahead of the Summer Games. “I think we came out with a lot of confidence“ Christie Rampone said. “I really believe in this team and I have the confidence that we'll bounce back.“ The loss was also the first for the U.S. women's soccer team under the lead of coach Pia Sundhage (who took over in November).
For Norway, the won match should be considered as a revenge after two 4-0 losses to the U.S. this year, and gives the team impulse as it tries to reclaim the Olympic title it won in Sydney.
On Saturday, the U.S. plays Japan and Group G leader Norway takes on New Zealand.
