Chris Cantell Discusses Sports: Another doping scandal at Tour de France
by Martina Janeckova
The 11th-stage victory on Wednesday July 16th 2008 by Norwegian veteran Kurt-Asle Arvesen was put into shade by the arrest of Spain’s rider Moises Duenas Nevado. Before the stage began, police came into the hotel where Duenas Nevado and his team Barloworld was staying and they found unspecified “banned medicines” in his room. Duenas Nevado tested positive for EPO after the 4th stage time trial in Cholet on July 8, said Pierre Bordry, head of the French anti-doping agency. He was immediately suspended by his team and disqualified from the race. On orders from a state prosecutor, police held him overnight for questioning. Barloworld manager Claudio Corti said that he was shocked and that his team was not involved in this story overall. Barloworld got even more bad news on Wednesday, when two team riders terminated because of injuries and the team now has the minimum 5 riders. The case was the second positive EPO test this year. Spanish veteran Manuel Beltran tested positive after the first stage of this year’s Tour. There have been many doping scandals in cycling in recent years and especially on Tour. Since the start of last year’s race, at least a half-dozen doping cases have been related to the Tour. International Cycling Union president Pat McQuaid said that the lure of glory in cycling’s main event influences doping. Since the Tour is the biggest event in the world and people will take that risk, there are much more doping cases than throughout the rest of the year. Cadel Evans from Australia said he was very sorry for the image of cycling, complaining that the case took his first ride in yellow jersey into the back seat.by Martina Janeckova for PocketNews (http://pocketnews.tv) |
