by Zuzana Zelenakova

Manchester United and France´s Lyon have both qualified for the Champions League quarter-finals after the British eliminated AC Milan and Lyon held all star Real Madrid at the Bernabeu stadium. "You can say it's a great achievement. We escaped the worst possible scenario in first half... Hats off to the players who gave all they had tonight. We played a superb second half and I think we deserved it," said Lyon coach Claude Puel. Real Madrid have not been very fortunate in past few years when it comes to the tournament as they failed to qualify for the past six seasons. They were beat 2-1 on aggregate by Olympique Lyon. Manchester United profited once again from the W! ayne Rooney´s striker artin the opening seconds of the second period and AC Milan experienced quite a humiliating 4-0 loss. "We got the break with the early goal in the second half and after that we played very well. When we play at that tempo we are difficult to play against. With the team I've got it dosn't matter who we play next," said United manager Alex Ferguson. David Beckham who stepped on the field for the last 25 minutes as a replacement for Ignazio Abate was greeted by big ovation, and although he could not do much about the outcome of the match, fans definitely enjoyed his performance as he struck volley that Dutch goalkeeper for Manchester Van der Sar had to touch over the bar. Real Madrid Lyon match began with Real winning the ball and Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris had to step in against Kaka. After the break Real lost a lot of their steam and Lyon began to have the edge on the Spanish club. Pjanic surprised home fans as he drove a volley past Casillas 15 m! inutes before the final whistle.
