France is the European rugby champion

More than one century, six European countries measure their forces playing rugby in an annual competition. This year’s union finished two days ago and France won the golden trophy and it is officially European champion. Frenchmen hold the title Grand Slam which they won on their field on Stade de France, against England. Aside of them, other countries that participate in the Championship, are: England, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales. They are actually the six major Northern Hemisphere rugby union national teams. This was France’s trophy after six years. France coach Marc Lievremont didn’t hide his pride of being the couch of the champions. "It is a mo! ment of great pride for me and for the squad. I thought for a while we were afraid of winning the match. The English largely dominated but we had the nerve in the end to hold on," – said Lievremont. For those who understand this sport and saw this match say that that wasn’t an impressive one and that French team was lucky, but still, the winner is the winner, no matter whether one like it or not. The system of the games is simple. Each team plays every other team once. If a team wins all the games, that it has won Grand Slam. England is a record holder, with 12, followed by Wales with 10 and the least is Ireland with 2. The Championship still has a good sense of humor – the one that finished last on the table, wins award Wooden Spoon. How did this league start? In 1871, England and Scotland formed the first official rugby union. During 12 years they would compete among each other, but wehen in 1883, Ireland and Wales decided to join the fray, they made t! he competition to start. The championship has been temporarily! during the two World Wars.
