Red wins?
by kristina leskova

Now it is the time of Olympic Games and scientists are trying to find out if there is something what could help to the athletes to win medals. Of course that the athletes have to be well prepared, well trained and there are many other factors which influence their performance. One of the factors can be the color of their clothes. There was made a study in 2005. This study said that athletes wearing red clothes have an advantage over blue dressed athletes. The researchers think that it has to do something with the perceptions in the human brain. How was this study made? Scientists examined one-on-one sports on the Olympic Games in 2004 in Athens. There were sportsmen who wear red or blue outfits. This study was made in four sporting disciplines – boxing, tae kwon do, Greco – Roman wrestling and freestyle wrestling. In 16 of 21 rounds won more red dressed athletes than blue dressed. The scientists made an analyse in Euro 2004 soccer tournament where football teams wore different colors of shirts. And the result was that the red dressed football teams won more frequently. The scientists think that the red color is connected with anger, dominance and aggressiveness. And for some of the athletes the red color serves as a motivational factor. But the psychologists disagree with this conclusion. They think that the red clothes can not be associated with higher probability of winning. For me the most important are the performances of the athletes and not their clothes. For example tennis players can not wear red clothes during the Wimbledon tournament.
