Perfect to the last detail
by Zuzana Zelenakova

China officials have tried really hard to bring Summer Olympics in Beijing to perfection. In order to present themselves the best way possible they moved thousands of migrant workers from the city and have kept an eye on the slightest indication of protest or trouble from the people. Now the public learned that little Chinese girl who performed “Ode to the Motherland” at the opening ceremony last Friday was in fact not really singing, but only lip synching. 9 years old Lin Miaoke smiling and pigtailed in a red dress and white shoes with fireworks over her head was lip synching the patriotic ballad while the actual singer was Yang Peiyi, aged 7. And the reason? The ruling Communist Party was putting pressure on the organizers of the evening to find not only perfect voice but also perfect face. So the musical director of the ceremony decided to use two girls in the end. Peiyi was not cute enough for some people to stand in the spotlights and was replaced by Miaoke who is no stranger to the camera and already is a little star. “The reason was for the national interest,” said Chen Qigang, general music designer of the opening ceremony. “The child on camera should be flawless in image, internal feeling and expression.” But to achieve the best result possible Zhang Yimou, famous Chinese director known for movies such as Hero or The House of Flying Daggers, who oversaw the production, have also admitted to digitally create part of the fireworks so the television audience could be completely overwhelmed by the image. The case of the two girls being switched like that has provoked national conversation and government censors were busy removing comments on the Internet. One person for example wrote: “They think Yang Peiyi´s smile is not cute enough? What we need is truth, not some fake loveliness.”
