World Cup 2010 Beginnings
by Claudia Sonea

On Friday soccer fans all over the world turned their TVs on and watched the first matches of the World Cup 2010. As it was for the first time an African nation hosted the tournament, South Africa spent around 6 billion dollars on building and upgrading stadiums that had to meet FIFA’s requirements. Major roads and highways, metros and airports have been upgraded too. Millions of soccerphiles watched the opening ceremony and they were impressed by the preparations and those travelling to see the matches were also pleased by the host country. Although the organizations was much debated and many voices raised against South ! Africa as not being prepared for such an event, the real disappointment were the matches that took place up to now. None of the teams trying the field from 11 June and up to now succeeded in electrifying the audience. The opening matches between South Africa and Mexico, as well as the one between Uruguay and France, were a surprise as their games proved to be tight and the players showed genuine interest. The worst match up to now was that between Japan and Cameroon because we were bored to death and the final score was crystal clear from the beginning. On the other hand the biggest disappointment came from Netherlands that had a predictable game and although it had won against Denmark with 2-0, the fans were not at all pleased with the team’s performance. All eyes are on the coaches as they have a crucial role in a team’s performance and at the end of the day most of the responsibility for a failure on the fie! ld lays on a coach’s shoulders. England’s Fabio Ca! pello br ought back on track the team and improved the players’ game, while Switzerland’s Ottmar Hitzfeld is on his last quest to win a title with a national team after having registered 20 titles. The two coaches are among the most promising ones and people expect a lot from them and the teams they train. Stay connected and check out whether the forecast was right or they will fail causing great disappointment!
