by Magdalena Rosova

The 2010 FIFA World Cup started this Thursday night with glamorous music concert full of famous international and local stars such as Shakira, the Black Eyed Peas and Alicia Keys. Thousands of people filled the Orlando Stadium in Soweto in South Africa. For the first time such a huge music event has been organized for the World Cup opening. The concert was broadcast live all over the world and it was opened by Black Eyed Peas show. Shakira, originally from Colombia, accompanied by South African group Freshly Ground sang the official World Cup anthem "Waka Waka (This time for Africa)." Organizers say the concert had the biggest global television audience ever, even more than! Live Earth in 2007. All age groups came for the opening event, children and adults altogether sang and waved South African flags. Full stadium with capacity for 30,000 people reminded 1995 when South Africa won the rugby World Cup. The country was recently free from apartheid rule and therefore the World Cup was seen as a symbol of uniting the country. South African President Jacob Zuma and FIFA President Sepp Blatter came for the concert as well. Money earned from the concert will go for FIFA's official social campaign for the World Cup. FIFA is planning to build 20 centers across Africa, where people from disadvantaged communities can get healthcare services, education and soccer training. FIFA believes that football can bring a positive change in Africa. South Africa will host the World Cup for one month, the first opening match will be between South Africa and Mexico.
