Laureus Awards


The awards are so important that the Oscar is not the only one capturing people attention. The World of sports has celebrated its champions and gave them awards stating their achievement along the 2007 year. Among winners were tennis number one Justine Henin, was named the best Sportswoman for the first time, ahead of last year's winner, Russia's world and Olympic pole vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva, while for his debut in Formula One with McLaren, Lewis Hamilton took the Breakthrough of the Year award. Paul Radcliff got the Comeback Athlete of the Year award, South Africa the rugby world champion won the Team of the Year award and Sergei Bubka, the Ukrainian pole vaulter, received the Lifetime Achievement award. Russian President Vladimir Putin attended the ceremony gala at St Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre. A record was registered by world tennis number one Roger Federer who won for the fourth time the prestigious Laureus Sportsman of the Year award on Monday. In 2007 he succeeded to capture three out of the four grand slam titles for the third successive season and to beat strong field including golfer Tiger Woods, Formula One champion Kimi Raikkonen and FIFA World Player of the Year Kaka in the race for the Laureus. He said he is very pleased and grateful to the voters, but the most cherished of the four awards is the first one. Also he hopes to receive it next year too due to the fact that it would fit his five successive Wimbledon titles. Keep yourself on top and you might just see your dream fulfilled.
