Chris Cantell Discusses Sports: Cause of death unveiled
by Claudia Sonea
U.S. men's marathon Olympic trials were marked by the tragic death of the elite distance runner Ryan Shay who collapsed on Saturday in the Central Park. He was 28 years old and despite the fact that he was diagnosed at the age of 14 with an enlarged heart, the doctors kept validating him for contests, because it is not something unusual among elite athletes. Usually the hard training can lead to the enlargement of the heart due to the bigger quantity of blood pumped by it. Also this disease is commonly for drinkers, smokers and overweighed people and can increase the endurance. About five and half miles in the race, Ryan collapsed and at the city hospital he was declared death. Dr. Douglas Zipes, a spokesman for the American College of Cardiology said that the enlarged heart is hard to be distinguished from deadly hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. He added that sometimes the athletes stop from any activity and if it's not a deadly disease their heart will shrink during the resting time. Ryan together with other athletes passed a medical exam in Flagstaff, Ariz., where he trained, last spring, according to his father. In his statement to Associated Press, Joey Shay, the athlete father, revealed that doctors could not adequate test his son when he was a teenager because his heart rate was too low. Zipes confronts athletes with the fact that they do not confess their possible health problems. Ryan's death could have been caused exactly by what he thought it was helping him in being more resistant. The doctors represented by Ellen Borakove, spokeswoman for the city medical examiner's office syas they want to do a detailed autopsy before giving a sentence, until then the cause is still to be unveiled. He was a beloved son and an athlete who stirred admiration and envy. May his soul rest in peace and God have mercy on him and that all his sins to be forgiven.
