Contador versus Armstromg
by Barbora Misakova

The Tour de France, an annual bicycle race, covers approximately 3,600 kilometers throughout France and bordering countries. This race lasts three weeks and as seven-time winner Lance Armstrong has said, it is the world’s greatest bike race and with no doubts one of the most grueling sporting events. Every rider who attends Tour de France has to be prepared to cycle an average of 200 kilometers every day in wind, rain, stifling heat or icy cold. As Philip Turle, RFI’s journalist covering this event said about this year’s race: “They have to climb up steep mountains – sometimes several times in the same day – and this year they had to cycl! e across long stretches of treacherous cobblestones.” As it is with every kind of race, also in Tour de France is the question who will be a winner the most important one. Event it is still far too early to tell, the main favorite is last year’s winner Alberto Contador of Spain. As Turle wrote, since Contador’s first victory in 2007 he has been going from strength to strength. While in last year’s race Contador rode for the same team as Armstrong (Astana), this year Armstrong has created his own team (Radion Shack). Armstrong, who has said this will be his last Tour, stands a good chance of winning. But Contador is 11 years younger and Armstrong knows it. In spite of his lower physical power, he is sure to take advantage of any unexpected weaknesses in Contador’s strategy. If Armstrong wins, it will be his eighth victory.
