by Barbora Misakova
Winter Olympic Games are the most watched program on the TV these days. Every country around the world is keep its fingers crossed for their sportsmen and any won medal is widely celebrated. It’s no surprise, as a medal from Olympics is a worldwide success. In snowboard cross three medals went to Canada, France and Switzerland. Canadian Maelle Ricker won the women’s snowboard cross gold medal. This 31-year-old women became the first Canadian woman who won a gold medal at home in the Olympics. But she was also lucky. When she fell on the first qualifying run and the weather conditions were threatening to cancel the second and final qualifying run, her qualificati! on was in danger. Fortunately the decision was made to carry on with the qualifying, so Ricker finally qualified in third place. As she said: “The first run was a disaster. But I went back up to the start, I refocused, I visualized. Just thought about my lines and threw down a solid run and stayed on my feet and stayed balanced.” And so she won. Desire to win is natural to all humans, but it is even stronger when the victory could make their homeland visible to the rest of the world. The day before U. S. snowboarder Seth Wescott stole the gold medal from Canadian Mike Robertson what was another reason why to win! Ricker turned the tables on Lindsey Jacobellis of the United States. Rain and fog caused that snow was as soft as “mashed potatoes” said Jacobellis. Even though she was very close to Ricker, she lost her balance after a bad landing and so lost also chance to win. But as she added: “It’s definitely not the end of the world for me.! ”
