Shapes of Olympic Games...
by Milota Sidorova
There's been so much politics rounding graphic and visual concepts, inseparable part of every kind of business. The greatest logos and averts can stick up its message without noticing. Perfect combination of colors, shapes and motto can provoke unbelievable response. As we say, it is your campaign, not your product, what makes you famous.
Let's start somewhere around Coca-Cola, Apple, McDonald, Nazi's...All those symbols have created history, all of them have become alike world's heritage.
So it is with Olympic logo. Five interlacing circles, designed by Pierre Coubertin are exactly what make true Olympics. There's a respected rule among graphic designers to create successful logo lined with horizont, rather than build it up to the sky. Horizontal line evokes the stability and reinforces customer's trust in the company.
Horizontal logos are easier to see from a long distance.
Rule no. 2, the simplicity. According psychologists, the human civilization varies among three basic shapes – circle, triangle and square. Each of them represents different attitudes and values. However, circle is the most perfect shape ever created, it represents harmony, unifying and eternity. It also refers to mother, belly, sun, open mouth and ancient passive sexual desire. Triangle is traditional male's symbol, representing the power of phallus. Its sharp lines refer to action, will and immediately decisions.
Triangles are very good to reinforcing domination and authority, however, they are not typical consumer's logos. The most powerful triangles are the Eye of God, Pyramids, arrows and mountain peaks. If considered, it it the circle triumphing all over the world of symbols.
So the Olympic circles do. Five interlaced circles have been considered to represent " the activity of the Olympic Movement and represents the union of the five continents and the meeting of athletes from throughout the world at the Olympic Games."
Good concept, good plan. To let you know more about Olympic logo, one must say, that it had been represented to Olympic Committee in 1913 but however, the very next year the World War I. Has broken, logo kept waiting until 1920 Antwerp Olympics, when officially released. It's simplicity and clearly message gained the worldwide popularity and soon became one of the very brand of the most prestigious sport event.
Circles have continuously appeared since Berlin 1936's Games, followed with second logo or mascot of the hosting town.
Flag with the circles also raises up during magnificent opening and lowers by closing ceremonial. The flag consequently passes to the mayor of the next hosting city.
However, back to the interpretation, there's been various opinions, that five circles can, except of traditional view of unifying five continents also mean the previous five Olympiads completed prior to 1914. The Historian David Young declares, there's only not five, but seven continents on Earth.
But, no matter what, the possibility of changing or attacking almost hundred years old emblem equals zero. Circles have become truly international logo, inseparable from the only one meaning - the most popular and valued sport competition of motto - Citius, Altius, Fortius, which translated from Latin means "Faster, Higher, Stronger".
