Michelle Wie facing men on the field
by Claudia Sonea

Do you remember Michelle Wie from the LPGA Tour? Well, I do because I thought that disqualifying her was stupid. Although she left the scoring area without signing the score card after Friday’s second round, she played well enough and a win or a high finish would have ensured her a spot in top 80 LPGA players this year and thus enough money for an exemption for the next year tour. Why were the LPGA Tour officials so hard on her? Beats me!
Michelle Wie is nevertheless a fighter and will not give up. After last year she had both her wrists injured and didn’t succeed more than two cuts, this year she showed big improvements at the State Farm Classic in Illinois. Moreover, she shooed away speculation about her participating only in women’s competition by joining the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open and competing against men.
The PGA Tour officials said it is her first time in the tournament this year and they are happy to give her this opportunity that she considers to make her a better player. On July 31 the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open starts at Montreux Golf & Country Club- one of the weakest fields on the PGA Tour. Michelle has to win at least $80,000 so that she can assure a 2009 LPGA Tour card. If at the U.S. Women's Open in Minnesota she said she will not pursue the competition because it interferes with school, now after being disqualified she changed her mind (she attends Stanford part time). At the age of 18, her seventh and final LPGA Tour event of this year at the CN Canadian Women's Open in August will sort things out for her.
On the field she swings the cross and seems to be determined to win. She will not give up her dream and the all thing left to say is: Good luck!
