Powell beats Bolt in Sweden
by Zuzana Zelenakova
Asafa Powell, well-known Jamaican sprinter, beat on Tuesday in Stockholm, Sweden his rival and current 100 metres record holder Usain Bolt. 21 year old Bolt did not have a successful start and even afterwards was not able to catch up with his older 25 year old sports colleague who timed wonderful 9.88 second. Asafa Powell held the world record in the 100 m from June 2005 to May 2008. At the Reebok Grand Prix in New York City was his reign ended after almost three years by Bolt who is also from Jamaica and who managed the track in 9.72 seconds. “I had a good start and I managed to maintain my speed to the end,” Powell said after the race. And how Bolt coped with the defeat? Well, he seemed to maintain his confidence, it was a bit of disappointment though: “That doesn´t change anything,” was his simple statement. “I was disturbed by the false start. I could not focus on 100 percent.” “Am I going to do the double in Beijing? It is my coach Glen Mills who will decide,” he commented on what interests the sports fans most these days. However, there were also other great performances in Stockholm although the confrontation between Powell and Bolt stayed in the spotlight. The Cuban hurdler Dayron Robles fell just 0,04 seconds outside his 110 metres world record time from Ostrava, Czech Republic. Still he achieved time of 12,91, which is the fourth fastest time in history. The two Americans David Oliver and Aries Merritt made it just behind Robles. Young Sudanese runner Abubaker Kaki won the men´s 1,000 metres with time 2:13:93 and got the Dickson Trophy. “It was my first 1,000 (outdoors) ever,” he said. “I tried to beat the world record, but it´s very hard to beat. Still, I´m very happy with my performance.”
