David And Goliath 3:2
by Eva Zelenakova

Do you hear bible story about David and Goliath? Can you remember the end of this old story? If you can't, let me tell you the point. This story was about huge and powerful Goliath who was one day proudly fighting with small and skinny David. And guess who won?....I will give you a clue....not Goliath. All I wanted to say is, that sometimes it's surprising when we hear about little and not expected team to win like on Wednesday Croatia hits the England Goliath. And smacks him out from the EURO 2008. It will be the first time since 1984 that England miss out on the European Championship finals and the first time since the 1994 Word Cup that they have failed to qualify for a major tournament. All big preparing process for England team was for nothing. And last night was better little David. Croatia coach Slaven Bilic said that his team was simply a much better team last night. In the fact it was big surprise when fans on tribunes saw 2:2 and after a second-half substitute England captain Beckham said:"This is a big setback, not just for the players but the nation.....We have to show the English way which is to fight back." But they didn't win the match and Big Goliath fall down in front of the little David. Wednesday 21st November brought sadness to England Goliath but happiness to David Croatia.

Euro 2008 is coming
by Natalia Holvova

Soccer can be really tensive. Tons of fans are expecting the results of the star teams going to the final. England is in agony. Next coming match is going to be the one that will claim British succession. England boss Steve McClaren is creating a strategy that can not have any unexpected weaknesses or empty holes that can give a chance to the team of Croatia to win. No mistakes are allowed! Sport will reign in the second half of June 2008 in Austria and Switzerland. 52 teams had an opportunity to prove their capabilities and strength. Only 16 teams will go to Euro 2008 and will be able to compete with the best of the best. People will sit in their living rooms watching the games or will come to the pubs where they can share their glee and euphoria. Sports has special power to connect people. Fans of the same team seem better friends than usual and they also share mutual protest and rivalry against the others. English players has big day ahead. All the stress and nerves are cumulating and centered into one game. Game that will become historic moment. No draw is allowed! English want to win and go to the final with pride and honour. A lot of people trust them, a lot of people wish them luck, a lot of players build-up to be in the best condition to reach the aim they started with. Wednesday is the day! Maybe some of us will not be able to watch the game, maybe some will wait in the bathroom until results, maybe we don't care. But the game is coming...

Masters Cup Over for Djokovic
by Barbora Kasparova

After the Thursday's lost to Spaniard Nadal 6-4 6-4, Serb Novak Djokovic is heading home from the last Grand Slam of the year held in Shanghai. Although Djokovic is considered to be the biggest disappointment of the tournament, he has not lost his optimism: "...but I don't want to think negative. It's been an amazing year, just too long." (http://uk.news.yahoo.com/afp/20071115/tts-tennis-atp-masters-6d6e476_4.html) The 20 year-old Djokovic is currently ranking 3rd in the ATP chart with 4470 points. He's certainly had a successful year, in Australian open he reached the fourth round and lost to Federrer, reached semi-finals in Wimbledon and Roland Garros, and made it to the finals in the U.S. Open where he again got beaten by Federrer. As his coach, Marian Vajda, former Slovak tennis player and former head of the Slovak Davis Cup team and fed Cup team, remarked: "His progress is amazing," (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/tennis/2007-09-04-djokovic-challenging_N.htm). Djokovic is planning some rest for the Christmas and in January he'll play again on the Australian Open in Melbourne. (For more information on his schedule or on Djokovic, check out his official web site www.novak-djokovic.com) We will know the winner of this year's Masters Cup on Sunday; semifinals will be played on Saturday. Master Cup latest
by Claudia Sonea

New surprises on the tennis court, where former champion Roger Federer had lost for the fist time in four and a half years consecutive matches against Fernando Gonzalez from Chile. After entering the match with a 15-0 record in round-robin play at the season-ending tournament, he had a 4-6, 7-6 (1), 7-5 decision Monday. Still he is keeping his hopes up and says that there is no need to worry, because he will prove to the other players they are wrong about him. Last time when Federer lost consecutive matches was in 2003 when he fell in the third round at Hamburg, then in the first round at the French Open. He is 26 years old, has 12 Grand Slams and hopes to beat Pete Sampras' record of 14 Grand Slam titles soon. His optimism hasn't perished despite the fact that he had some unpleasant few weeks due to the fact that he won three Grand Slam titles and extended his record run with the No. 1 ranking to a fourth year. On Monday it seemed that he will repeat his performance from Australian Open final in January when he beat Gonzalez in straight sets. Still, in the second-set tiebreaker Gonzalez stunned by bolting to a 6-0 lead and then he continued a strategy of breaking points- for the first time in consecutive games in the third set. No. 5 Andy Roddick in the other Red Group match succeeded to defeat No. 5 Nikolay Davydenko with 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. After being tormented by injuries that kept him out of competitions in Madrid and Paris, Roddick will lead the United States against Russia in the Davis Cup final at the end of the month. He states he is healthier and that he is working his leg muscles and his volleys in order to make them sharper. He seemed untouchable in the first match and broke Davydenko to pull ahead 4-3 in the second. Jimmy Connors his regular coach is not in Shanghai, but Davis Cup Coach Patrick McEnroe is around. Master Cup started promising and it continues to take us by surprise. Stay connected and track the winner, but don't bet your money on anyone, because nothing is clear at this point. Enjoy!

Cause of death unveiled
by Claudia Sonea

U.S. men's marathon Olympic trials were marked by the tragic death of the elite distance runner Ryan Shay who collapsed on Saturday in the Central Park. He was 28 years old and despite the fact that he was diagnosed at the age of 14 with an enlarged heart, the doctors kept validating him for contests, because it is not something unusual among elite athletes. Usually the hard training can lead to the enlargement of the heart due to the bigger quantity of blood pumped by it. Also this disease is commonly for drinkers, smokers and overweighed people and can increase the endurance. About five and half miles in the race, Ryan collapsed and at the city hospital he was declared death. Dr. Douglas Zipes, a spokesman for the American College of Cardiology said that the enlarged heart is hard to be distinguished from deadly hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. He added that sometimes the athletes stop from any activity and if it's not a deadly disease their heart will shrink during the resting time. Ryan together with other athletes passed a medical exam in Flagstaff, Ariz., where he trained, last spring, according to his father. In his statement to Associated Press, Joey Shay, the athlete father, revealed that doctors could not adequate test his son when he was a teenager because his heart rate was too low. Zipes confronts athletes with the fact that they do not confess their possible health problems. Ryan's death could have been caused exactly by what he thought it was helping him in being more resistant. The doctors represented by Ellen Borakove, spokeswoman for the city medical examiner's office syas they want to do a detailed autopsy before giving a sentence, until then the cause is still to be unveiled. He was a beloved son and an athlete who stirred admiration and envy. May his soul rest in peace and God have mercy on him and that all his sins to be forgiven.

Bye, bye Hingis
by Claudia Sonea

The tennis world says goodbye to Martina Hingis, a former tennis player and World No. 1, known as the "Swiss Miss", for a second time. However, the circumstances are different this time from the first time; in 2002 she retired due to a series of foot and leg injuries, while now she was forced to do it because of the doping allegations. Her return to the circuit full-time in 2006 was rather successful: two Grand Slam quarterfinals, two smaller tournaments victories and rank No 7. This season was indeed more difficult, she was ranked No 19 and the day of the drug exam she just lost against Laura Granville of the United States in the third round at Wimbledon. Was that enough to take drugs, especially cocaine? She vowed at the press conference held Thursday that she had never taken drugs. The allegations are so monstrous that she can not continue playing and decided to talk to the press. Was that a strategy move in order to gain sympathy? Sweden-based International Doping Tests & Management- an independent agency handles the doping tests for WTA, according to WTA Tour chief executive Larry Scott. He added that a lot of people feel sadness, but they have to keep in mind that everyone has the presumption of innocence until the end of the process. Usually there is a first urine sample that is tested and if it gets positive than athletes are being told- Mario Widmer, Hingis' manager, said they announced her in mid-September- then there is a second sample and Hingis received the results two weeks after the first result. She had hip and back injuries when she did the tests, but she did not want to miss the tournament. Nevertheless, the painkillers she took then might have been responsible for the results. Hingis hired an attorney who said that the doping officials mishandled the process and they have no evidences that the urine sample with cocaine came from her. Furthermore, the case will continue, even if she walked away from tennis. Doping expert Dr. Gary Wadler said they can detect cocaine up to five days after its use. As a former U.S. Open's head doctor, he stated that although cocaine is not a performance-enhancing drug, but theoretically could help overcoming fatigue, reaction time and so on after two or three hours it is consumed. Martina says she doesn't need the effects of the cocaine like euphoria, because her only one performance enhancer is love of the game. She added that someone under the effects of drugs could not play top class tennis. Her career of five Grand Slam singles titles and a rise to the top of the rankings at 16, the youngest No. 1 ever ended in not so favorable circumstances. She has to face the embarrassment of a cocaine accusation and stand up for her innocence. Also, this season was not so fortunate for her either. Was she or her trainer that stupid to jeopardize their achievements by using cocaine just before the drug tests? The truth is about to be revealed…don't go away!
