New surprises on the tennis court, where former champion Roger Federer had lost for the fist time in four and a half years consecutive matches against Fernando Gonzalez from Chile. After entering the match with a 15-0 record in round-robin play at the season-ending tournament, he had a 4-6, 7-6 (1), 7-5 decision Monday. Still he is keeping his hopes up and says that there is no need to worry, because he will prove to the other players they are wrong about him. Last time when Federer lost consecutive matches was in 2003 when he fell in the third round at Hamburg, then in the first round at the French Open. He is 26 years old, has 12 Grand Slams and hopes to beat Pete Sampras' record of 14 Grand Slam titles soon. His optimism hasn't perished despite the fact that he had some unpleasant few weeks due to the fact that he won three Grand Slam titles and extended his record run with the No. 1 ranking to a fourth year. On Monday it seemed that he will repeat his performance from Australian Open final in January when he beat Gonzalez in straight sets. Still, in the second-set tiebreaker Gonzalez stunned by bolting to a 6-0 lead and then he continued a strategy of breaking points- for the first time in consecutive games in the third set. No. 5 Andy Roddick in the other Red Group match succeeded to defeat No. 5 Nikolay Davydenko with 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. After being tormented by injuries that kept him out of competitions in Madrid and Paris, Roddick will lead the United States against Russia in the Davis Cup final at the end of the month. He states he is healthier and that he is working his leg muscles and his volleys in order to make them sharper. He seemed untouchable in the first match and broke Davydenko to pull ahead 4-3 in the second. Jimmy Connors his regular coach is not in Shanghai, but Davis Cup Coach Patrick McEnroe is around. Master Cup started promising and it continues to take us by surprise. Stay connected and track the winner, but don't bet your money on anyone, because nothing is clear at this point. Enjoy!
