Tour de France Winner
by Claudia Sonea
The 97th Tour de France has come to an end and the winner is the famous Spaniard Alberto Contador. From Saturday July 3rd to Sunday July 25th 2010 cycling fans all over the world watched anxious the competition to see who will be the lucky winner. After a thrilling ride over 1 prologue and 20 stages, the winner was finally decided at a difference of 39 seconds. Nowadays, there are few role models for the young people and often the models are negative. However, Contador is a vivid image of a fighter against all oddities, a fighter that never gives up and always tries to go beyond his limits. After in 2004 he was diagnosed with an aneu! rism and had to go through an operation that left him with a 100 stitches scar, he got back on the bicycle and won the 2007 Tour de France as member of the Discovery Channel team and with UCI ProTeam Astana he took home the 2008 Giro d'Italia trophy, the 1st prize at the Vuelta a España in 2008 and twice in a row (in 2009 and in 2010) Tour de France. Like in any sports, accusations of doping surrounded him frequently, but he was never found guilty of any wrong doings and he has always maintained his innocence. His performances from across the year, show that he doesn’t succeed only on short term (like most of the athletes that use steroids), but he is a full champion whole-heartedly dedicated to cycling. Let’s just wish him good luck and hope he will continue to amaze and be a role model for the generations to come just like his forerunner, Lance Armstrong.
