The Games in crisis
by Zuzana Zelenakova
The 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, People's Republic of China will be held from August 8, 2008 to August 24, 2008 with opening ceremony at the Beijing National Stadium which is called also Bird's Nest thanks to its unique structure. Right next to it is situated another often discussed architectonic piece of work constructed exclusively for the Games and that is Beijing National Aquatics Centre nicknamed the Water Cube. China has put a lot of effort into preparations for the most important sports event of the year but it does not seem so far that Beijing Olympics are going to be “the best in Olympic history” as former president of the International Olympic Committee Juan Antonio Samaranch predicted earlier in 2007. The problems China is facing right now are not only due to concerns about environmental issues but mainly violations of human rights in Tibet, but not only there. Many protests have been organized by groups demanding for Tibetan independence and also representation of Tibet with its own national flag. Even Hollywood actor Richard Gere known for his involvement with situation in Tibet called for the boycott of the Games. “The Chinese government and citizenry are now involved in fighting a propaganda war with West and the Western media in particular. ... This stance, taken together with hyper Chinese nationalism, has all the makings of a public relations disaster for the Olympic Games,” commented David L. Shambaugh, a political scientists and expert on China policy, on current international atmosphere. The Olympics are not supposed to be about politics as was repeated so many times, but that definitely cannot be said about Beijing 2008. Well, maybe with the return of the Olympic flame to China and several minor events on the occasion of 100 days till the beginning of the Games the things will get better.
