Super Bowl brings a new audience record
by Daniela Kuruczova

The final match of the US National Football League, Super Bowl, became the second most-watched TV program in the American history. The game between New York Giants and New England Patriots has drawn more than 97.5 million US viewers to the TV screen &3.42 million more viewers than in the last Super Bowl viewers record form 1996. The first rank in the chart of most-watched TV shows is held by the final episode of M*A*S*H, which was watched by 106 million viewers in 1983. The actual game was attractive to the viewers as the one of the teams & New England Patriots - entered the final unbeaten. The result of the match was surprising too & Patriots got beaten 17-14 by the less favored Giants. High ratings pleased also the advertisers, who payed for the commercial time during Super Bowl. The price for 30 second spot was $2.6 million and more. Recently, the usual commercials are not that watched thanks to new digital devices like TiVo and drooping number of TV viewers in general - Super Bowl is for advertisers a unique chance to promote themselves in front of large audience. "Overall it was a great year for Super Bowl advertising," said professor Tim Calkins, Super Bowl review leader at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management. Also the Fox station, which aired the final, used part of the commercial time to promote their new shows.
