Because of the popularity of the race, participation is limited to 37,000 entrants chosen largely by a lottery system. It is a long year tradition and it is a great honor to be part of this race. The race attracts many world-class professional athletes, not only for the more than $600,000 in prize money, but also for the chance of becoming top news in all of the media around USA. This year’s winner was complete surprise. Gebre Gebremariam, 26 years old from Ethiopia, in his first ever marathon, won the race after breaking ahead of his last rival, Emmanuel Mutai ! of Kenya, in the 25th mile to finish alone with a time of 2 hours 8 minutes 14 seconds. Mutai finished second, with more than a minuite behind Gebremariam. Edna Kiplagat won the women's title with a time of 2 hours, 28 minutes, 20 seconds, ahead of American Shalane Flanagan. The race featured 37-year-old world record holder Haile Gebrselassie, who ran with a bad knee and dropped out of the race at the 16th mile. Afterwards, he announced his retirement.

I like watching balloons, and I love when they fly at night resembling fireflies. Although I like balloons and their design, I would probably never try to fly in it. I just can’t believe such a “light” and “small” transportation can fly and carry heavy cargos. Accident that happened Thursday just supports my fear. Veteran balloon pilots – Richard Abruzzo and Carol Rymer-Davis – were participating in the 54th Gordon Bennett Gas Balloon Race. Now they are missing and U.S. together with Croatian search and rescue teams are searching for them. These two American balloonists disappeared in rough weather over the Adriatic Sea, which is di! stant 60 nautical miles from the Croatian coast and 29 from that Italian one. Uninhabited parts of Croatia’s distant are also scanned, but “there is no news so far about the missing balloon.” said Marina Haluzan, the spokeswoman for the Croatian Ministry of the Sea and Transport. Although Croatian and Italian coastal authorities are in touch and cooperate, their balloon, equipped with a satellite telephone, VHF radios, radar transponder and two mobile telephones couldn’t disappear just like that. “They could not possibly still be flying.
