Successful start for France in 6 Nations campaign
by Zuzana Zelenakova
Sunday was a lucky day for French rugby team Stade francais as they beat their Scottish hosts at Murrayfield, Edinburgh. 9-18 victory over Scotland opened successfully their 2010 Six Nations campaign. This year´s tournament is known as 2010 RBS 6 Nations as it is sponsored by the Royal Bank of Scotland. It is the 11th championship in a row and involves teams from England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales. As Scotland lost on Sunday, it became the first hosting side to lose a match in this year´s series. The French team profited immensely from the presence of 21-year-old Mathieu Bastareaud, for who this was the first match after forced three months break! following the incident in New Zealand. Bastereaud suffered some facial injuries there and claimed he was assaulted by several unknown men outside the hotel where the team was staying. Later, after the New Zealand police initiated the investigation, he confessed that being drunk he actually tripped over a table in his hotel room and only wanted to keep the fact from the team management. The incident had some international implications involving intervention of prime ministers of both countries. However, at Murrayfield Bastareaud played as if he was trying to redeem himself and his effort definitely contributed to the victory of his team. He censured the lead with two first half tries, the second almost untouched. Even though Scotland created several line breaks they were unable to seize the opportunity. With the French leading 6-15 at half time it seemed the home side lost their fighting spirit and only managed to add one Morgan Parra penalty. "We conceded two soft tries, b! ut I thought we were in control defensively," said the Scottis! h coach Andy Robinson. "Also we got behind the French defense several times but the French defense scrambled very well and Imanol Harinordoquy made two or three great tackles.”
