Surprise, surprise
by Claudia Sonea
Romanians are boasting over the result they obtained on Monday at the Euro 2008. The match with the world’s vice champion ending at 0-0 was quite a performance after the struggles and fails they went through before. However, the fans present at the match were not satisfied of the players’ performance. Things could have been worst, if we took a look at the game between Italy and the Dutch in the second game in group C. France lost to Italy on penalties in the final in Berlin two years ago, but the Dutch revenged them and managed to beat the world champions with 3-0. Raymond Domenech, France’s coach, said that there were many factors involved in the fail to beat Romanians and they had a similar start in 2006. He added that next on their list are the Dutch on Friday, in Berne, and then the game in Zurich on Tuesday. Before Monday both the Dutch and the Romanians were considered goners in front of the champion and vice champion of the world, but the situation took a surprisingly turn. Victor Piturca, the Romanian coach, forecasted that it might be possible for his team to win, but was thrilled of the result and of the contempt of the fans. As proud as a peacock, he confessed he would have liked to get three points instead of one and that maybe the score reflect France is not quite as good as it once was. I would say that our luck was scorer Thierry Henry, the Barcelona striker, could not play and I would prefer the variant where French players let us win in an access of generosity. Yet, Adrian Mutu contradicts me and says both teams did their best and he said that he wasn’t fit to play as his grandmother who up brought him died a few days earlier. Romanians will meet Italy next Friday in Zurich, so we wish both the team good luck and God’s help be with them.
