On the tennis court
by Claudia Sonea
The famous major tennis tournament Roland Garros is marked by some amazing results and there are already big surprises. At the Stade de Roland Garros in Paris, France, on Wednesday the audience was electrified by the performances and the competition You remember that Roger Federer arrived at the tournament with only one title, seven losses and the reputable rivalry with Rafael Nadal who denied him a career Grand Slam at the French Opening by defeating him in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Yet, on Wednesday he showed that he is not believed to be the greatest player for nothing. In the beginning many thought he will lose against 24th-seeded Fernando Gonzalez due to a 2-6 set, but then in the following sets he succeed to win his 16 consecutive Grand Slam semifinal with 6-2, 6-3, 6-4. He now needs two more victories to get his 13th major championship. Next match will be on Friday with 59th-ranked Gael Monfils who shouldn't be much of a threat as it is the lowest-ranked semifinalist in Paris in the past 9 years. Also, he now has the help of former coach of French Open champions Michael Chang and Jim Courier, so the victory is a sure deal, is it? Nadal will face on Friday No. 3 Novak Djokovic, who won the Australian Open in the final against Federer. I wonder who Federer is hoping to win. Besides him, No. 13-seeded Dinara Safina had a remarkable performance against No. 7 Elena Dementieva. Therefore there will be many spicy things in the final, stop losing time and switch the channel to watch it. Enjoy!
