Excuse the ape.
by Barbie Kunkelova

It hits you when you open the door. Even through the tiny slit you can sense the bad energy coming out of that room. 1177E, yes, you're right, this is your apartment. Push the door open. What do you see? Nothing in particular. The air is dusty and dank. The floor is… well, if there still IS floor, then it is buried under beer lids, wine corks, cans, few can-openers and beer-etiquettes and colorful straws, kitchen knives, napkins soaked in lime juice and hopefully ketchup, leftovers from magazines about gardening and cars, a rugby ball, bowls with crumbles in them and piles of cigarette stubs and scrunched out cigarettes. Along the walls and table legs there are slathers of bottles and plastic glasses. What a wonderful collection there is though; you recognize foreign or domestic products, some names vibrant with an aura of fame, some local brands purchased at the 7Eleven across the street. The curtains are missing, the blinds are closed. Are those larger objects actually bodies? You "shoulder" into what you remember used to be kitchen two days ago and discover your roommate behind the stove. She knows she should not be drinking after having too many black-outs recently. Her problem is being aware of this ("Never take large gulps!") and therefore drinking too slow & but on an empty stomach. She is watching the morning news and confesses that her boyfriend graduated last night and they had a little celebration. Party had gone out of control when one of the celebrators wrecked two cars at a near-by hotel's parking lot. Right now he is being arrested and his case is being inquired. You know him, she says, he plays rugby and lost to France over a week ago. And as I watch Doug Howlett, the famous All Blacks winger apologizing to his fans, I realize what a terrifying fact that is & that simply due to drinking ethanol even an amazing thing (as a human mind is) can get out of control and ruin everything.
