Whistler girl conquered Whistler
by Zivka Deleva
The fearless Canadian athlete Ashleigh McIvor simply ran down her rivals on the podium of the Whistler Mountain on Tuesday winning the Olympic gold in ski cross. Right behind her were Norwegian Hedda Bernsten and French Marion Josserand. She provided her country the sixth golden medal of the Games so far. Physically extraordinary fit, mentally maybe even better, with admiring technique and toughness, the second in the World Cup rankings, McIvor couldn’t stop taking breath of the fans. She grew up on the same mountain. She explained that having the chance to race in front of the host country eyes has been only a productive pressure. She justly wasn’t modest to ! say that she had the reason to be proud of herself. “This was the only race of my life where I just felt like I was going to win. I used to think it was bad to think that way, that I was going to jinx it, or that I’d be so disappointed if I then didn’t win. I don’t know, I just had a really good feeling about this race . . . this crazy feeling that I was going to win.” – said 26 years old skier. She added that her recent inspiration was her compatriot snowboard cross gold medalist Maelle Ricke. “I was thinking about what Maelle said when she finished [a week ago], that she was focused on exploding out of the start. Thank you Maelle. She was a real inspiration. She kind of made me go, ‘Okay, local girl. This event was made for us.’”. Ashleigh McIvor was a University of British Columbia. Seven years ago, she wrote an English class essay on the topics why should ski cross enter the Olympics. Yesterday she proved it! practically. Another good motivation for her was the crash of! her boy friend Chris Del Bosco on the podium spot, so she simply promised herself not to make the same mistake. Ashleigh started skiing since 2, when she was skiing down the carpeted steps into her family’s sunken living room.
